Going on a trip and need a place to store your make-up brushes, so they don't ruin that beautiful sweater you packed. Or do you need a quick gift for your best friend whose life seams to be cluttered with school supplies? No worries! This quick and easy zipper pouch tutorial will give you the perfect solution to your problem.

What You Will Need:

-(4) 8" x 5" rectangles. Two for outside fabric and Two for liner fabric.

-(1) 9" or 11" zipper

-a pair of scissors/rotary knife

-a ruler

-thread

-pins

-an iron

Step 1:

Cut your Fabric! 8"x 5"

4- 8" x 5" cuts of fabric

-You can make you zipper pouch as large or as small as you want. It can be a rectangle or a square. Whatever your heart desires. For this tutorial though I will be cutting two rectangles (8" in length and 5" in width) of each fabric having a total of 4 rectangles.

Step 2:

Pin fabric to Zipper!

The pins are missing. But only pin this piece to zipper!

-With the liner fabric facing the back of the zipper, pin the liner fabric to match top edges of the zipper.

Step 3:

Match and Sew!

-Make sure you have your zipper foot attached. Match the outside fabric to the liner fabric that you pinned to the zipper. Make sure all edges line up. Also make sure that the right side of each fabric are facing each other. Have you zipper foot placed up against the zipper. Start at the top. Back-stitch and sew, taking the pins out when you get close to them. DO NOT SEW OVER YOUR METAL NEEDLE! Back-stitch again when you come to the zipper.

Step 4:

Repeat Step 2 and 3!

-It might be easier to sew it with the zipper opened this time.

Step 5:

Press the Seam away from the Zipper!

-Using your free hand, pull in the opposite direction and press the seam away from the zipper. The wrong sides should be facing each other.

Step 6:

Top Stitch the Zipper!

-Line your zipper foot teeth along the edge of the fabric where it now runs parallel to the zipper. Back Stitch at each end. Do this for both sides of the zipper. Periodically check the liner fabric and make sure its bottom edge is flush with the outside fabric edge.

*Step 7:

Match like fabric! (Read and double check before stitching)

-This might be the most important step so please make sure you read this whole step

before proceeding. Match the outside to each other and match the liner fabric to each other. Make sure all edges are lined up and pin. Make sure your zipper is unzipped. I repeat: MAKE SURE YOUR ZIPPER IS UNZIPPED. You will not be able to open your bag, or it will be very hard to get unzipped if you miss this. and last but not least, make sure that your zipper teeth are going towards the liner fabric.

Step 8:

Stitch!

-Should be apart of step 6, but didn't want this to get confusing. Change your foot to a zig-zag or standard foot. Now I like to start stitching at the side where the zipper is not attached. I start with the teeth facing down. Go slow over your zipper and if you are using a metal zipper, make sure you hand-crank over the zipper. Pivot at the corners by leaving the needle in the fabric and lifting the presser foot. Turn fabric and place presser foot back down and proceed to sew. Sew the bottom of the outside inner shut. Leave an one to two inch, big enough to fit your index and thumb in, gap on the liner bottom. Back-stitch on each side of the opening.

Step 9:

Cut EVERYTHING!

-Okay maybe not everything. Cut the excess zipper. Also cut each corner at a diagonal. Do not cut the thread. This will give your corners a nice point.

Step 10:

Flip it!

-Flip the bag right side out through the gap left in the liner. You can now completely unzip the bag and pull the bag all the way through. Before we close that space, take your finger and push out all four corners.

Step 11:

Stitch the Gap left in the Liner!

-We are almost at the finish line. One more step to go. Stitch the gap in the liner

closed. Get as close to the edge as possible without going over it. Cut all loose ends.

Step 12:

Enjoy your new zipper Pouch!

-Sit back and give your self a pat on the back. That didn't take too long, probably took longer reading this blog. I hope you enjoy and make sure you check back to keep up with all the exciting things happening over at 3ofaKindBags.etsy.com
